Chapter 9

Garth closed his computer and stretched. He loved what he was doing, and the fact that he could do it anywhere allowed him to be home with his new wife. Getting up, he decided to go find her and see if she wanted to go on a run with him. He heard her before he saw her. She was in the kitchen talking to someone. Sneaking around the doorway, he watched her speaking to Polly, her new second.

“They’re to be run through their drills every day. No slacking off just because there is not much going on right now.” Polly nodded. “And I want you to come here to report to me on how the new ones are doing. I don’t want you to go soft on them, but remember that they’re only a few hundred years old and not as seasoned as the rest of us are.”

“I was wondering if I could assign one of the older warriors to each of the younger ones. It might go better for them if they learn from a master.” Garth wasn’t sure what Dark said, but he could only assume that she agreed with Polly. Garth realized that Dark was loading the dishwasher up and made his way into the kitchen before she started it. “Master Garth, my lord. How are you this fine day?”

“Great, and you?” She said she was doing well, and thanked him. “I’ve been wondering about my own second. Do you know if someone has been chosen?”

“No, my lord. We were not aware that you were ready for that.” Garth thought that Augustus had done at least that, but apparently not. Then he realized that he might not have because he was thinking he’d be in charge. “I will put the word out today. I hope that you don’t mind, but I’ve been keeping your warriors in shape with our men. They have been doing well.”

“Thank you. I want you to do that for me, if you don’t mind. And when this person is chosen, please bring them to meet Dark and myself.” She nodded and looked at Dark, who dismissed her. “What are you doing, love?”

“I was practicing. I watched Josh load this thing several times over the last few days, and think I have a better handle on it. I’m not too stressed either about how they need to be put in. He said so long as there is space between them that the water will do the rest.” He nodded. “They’re clean, the dishes I mean. I didn’t want to put dirty ones in incorrectly until I was better at it.”

“You did a wonderful job.” He pulled her into his arms and held her for several minutes before speaking again. “When do we go and see Aurora? I guess you’ve been keeping tabs on her for the last couple of weeks?”

“She’s doing much better, I think. There are times when she is so grief stricken that I fear for her, but she is having less and less of those pains.
